Welcome Andrew Brown – CCCC’s new Artistic Director
Andrew Brown (Bachelor of Music La Sierra University, Artists Diploma Hartt Conservatory, Master of Music Holy Names University), a leading Kodály based Choral and Instrumental Conductor, has been recently appointed Artistic Director of the Contra Costa Children’s Chorus. Brown also serves as the Artistic Director with the Vallejo Choral Society. His conducting credits include ten years as a conductor and musicianship teacher with the Pacific Boychoir Academy and Conductor of the Da Capo Youth Orchestra at Holy Names University. He recently completed his fifth year as the Concert Choir Director of the Piedmont East Bay Children’s Choir where he developed a regionally recognized curriculum for advanced musicianship training.
Professionally trained as a clarinetist, Brown began his career in High School playing with the Tulare County Symphony, a local professional orchestra. Focusing his early career on orchestral conducting he attended the Conductors Institute, earned an Artists Diploma in Instrumental Conducting at the Hartt Conservatory in Connecticut and studied under Jon Robertson, Harold Farberman, Daniel Lewis and Gustav Meier. As a young conductor he worked with the Southern California Young Artists Symphony, Riverside Master Chorale, Connecticut Valley Chamber Choir and appeared as a guest conductor with the New England Youth Orchestra, La Sierra Symphony, Hartford Conservatory Youth Ensemble and Hartt Conservatory Symphony.
After returning to California in 1996, Brown fell in love with the experience of working with youth choirs and turned his career in that direction. His pedagogical pursuits have culminated in a Master of Music in Music Education with a Kodály Emphasis from Holy Names University. He studied choral conducting and advanced musicianship with renowned teachers Anne Laskey, Judit Hartnyani, Ildi Salgado and Janos Harvoth.
Brown’s choirs have performed with Northern California’s leading musical organizations including the San Francisco Symphony, Oakland East Bay Symphony, San Francisco Choral Society, Santa Clara Chorale, San Francisco Bach Choir and UC Davis Symphony. He has toured dozens of times nationally and internationally. Brown lives in Martinez with his wife Stella who is a choral conductor, music educator and pianist. Together they have two children (Kate and Tem), a dog and a cat.
We are very excited about Andrew joining the chorus. The experience and dedication he applies to his conducting practice will be the foundation of CCCC’s artistic program. Andrew’s leadership will help the chorus to achieve its strategic goals as well as continue our legacy of excellence in music education and interpretation.
